*EMAS Handbook

'The EMAS handbook for schools' is provided annually for each school holding an SLA (level 1 subscription and Fixed Price Package).
Section 1 explains the role of EMAS and provides additional background information about the Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) pupils and pupils with English as an additional language (EAL) in Portsmouth.  There is further useful material for school staff who co-ordinate, manage and teach these pupils, as well as for school admin, particularly when admitting new pupils to school.

Sections 2 - 5 relates to the different types of support that are available through your school's SLA (Service Level Agreement) with EMAS.

  • Section 2 - refers to bilingual learning assistants (BLA)
  • Section 3 - refers to the work of the advisers
  • Section 4 - refers to CPD (Continuing Professional Development) training available through EMAS
  • Section 5 - refers to resources available through EMAS
The Portsmouth EMAS Team continues to be fully and solely funded by schools. Schools may choose to take out an annual subscription package, a fixed-price package or undertake a 'Pay As You Use (PAYU)' service in order to access EMAS facilities. Full details of the different service options and prices can be found in the Portsmouth City Council 'Traded services available to schools and academies' Directory.
If you are interested in taking out an SLA with Portsmouth EMAS please contact the Ethnic Minority Achievement Manager/Adviser, Karen Thomas, on 023 9273 3130, Karen.thomas.emas@portsmouthcc.gov.uk.
