The Ethnic Minority Achievement Service (EMAS) can provide schools with bilingual learning assistants to support EAL pupils in their first language and offers Adviser support and CPD for school staff.

All schools who wish to access any support from EMAS will need to become a 'member'.

The cost of this package supports EMAS, on behalf of all schools to continue developing and updating resources in line with best practice nationally.

  • Access to all EMAS resources: books, artefact boxes, festival and language packs etc.

  • Telephone/e-mail consultations

  • Access to on-line 'best practice' forum and networking opportunities

  • Regular updates, guidance and publications concerning BME and EAL pupils

 General Support Package

This package provides access to the full range of support from the entire EMAS team

To access this option, you must also have 'membership' of EMAS
  • BLAs - covering the most common languages in Portsmouth (representing 70% of pupils with EAL)

  • Advisers - Up to 2 days a year of visits to include: meetings, training and support for new arrival assessments, SEN assessments, action planning, planning and delivery of CPD

  • School Support Officer - generic advice for TAs for pupil support, including the use of resources, as well as bespoke resource commissioning

  • Access to all centrally run courses

  • Support for admissions, appeals and parental issues, wherever possible

Enhanced Advisor Package

This package aims to develop high-quality expertise in your school from qualified advisers.

To access this option, you must also have 'membership' of EMAS.
A)   6-7 days of adviser support, offered in ½ day visits to work with designated teacher(s)

      Adviser support could include:

  • analysis of school performance information, including needs analysis and action planning
  • co-ordinator development and capacity building within school
  • whole school / departmental / TA / NQT training and support, with follow up
  • curriculum development
  • developing methodologies which support the development of English for all pupils, including narrowing the gap for White British and other ethnic groups
  • resources and support for implementing interventions for EAL pupils, e.g. Racing to English - these will aim to build within-school capacity
B)   Access to all centrally run courses

Pay As You Use options

To access these options, you must have membership of EMAS

NB. Some support may not be available if oversubscribed e.g. BLAs
